Our Ethos

We partner with community-oriented, values-based, and mission-driven organizations because legal structure is never neutral. It influences who holds power, how decisions are made, what gets protected, and how value is shared.

About Us

Our work is grounded in the conviction that business ownership can be designed more equitably and justly,

and that legal counsel has a vital role to play in that work. That’s our agenda: align legal structure with core cultural values and expressions of cultural identity.

The Name

Our Evolution

CurrentShift Legal began as Jason Wiener p.c., in 2014. Our roots began in the belief that creative applications of law can help shape a more equitable, sustainable, and participatory economy. From the beginning, our work focused on organizations asking fundamental questions about ownership, governance, and long-term impact:

Who owns
Who decides
Who benefits… and how?

We partner with cooperatives, mission-driven businesses, nonprofits, and emerging ownership models because they share a mutual, deep commitment to aligning structure with purpose.

As the work grew in scope and complexity and across sectors and geographies, so did the need for a name that could better reflect it: and the future we’re collectively building.

CurrentShift speaks to both the moment and the movement.

Current is the energy of the present: the ongoing work of building more just and sustainable systems. It’s also a force of connection and flow that links people, organizations, and ecosystems.

Shift is the tactical and structural changes required to make those systems real and robust: shifts in ownership, power, governance, and value.

Together, the name reflects our commitment not to lead from the top, but to support and strengthen the shifts already underway.

Philosophy of service

We believe legal services should be high-quality, responsive, and personalized.

We also believe they should be candid, practical, and grounded in real relationships. Our role is not simply to produce documents or answer isolated legal questions. It is to serve as a thoughtful sounding board, a strategic advisor, and a steady partner in decision-making.

Our approach is creative, outcome-driven, and client-centered. We strive for a standard of excellence in everything we do. We prioritize long-term, trusted and accountable relationships, plain-language communication, and legal strategies that reflect the actual goals, pressures, and possibilities our clients are navigating.

In other words: rigorous counsel, without unnecessary posturing. Serious expertise, delivered by real people.

Core Values

Our values in action

The values that shape our client experience are straightforward.

Client Dignity

Clients deserve respect, clarity, and agency.

We treat clients with respect, clarity, and care. We believe people deserve to understand the process they are in, the options in front of them, and the reasoning behind the advice they receive.

Transparency

Trust is built through openness.

We communicate openly about scope, fees, timing, tradeoffs, and legal complexity. We do not hide the ball. We expect clients and partners to do the same.

Anti-oppression

Legal structures influence who holds power and who benefits.

We recognize that law and business are shaped by unequal systems. We aim to practice in ways that reduce extraction, expand access where possible, and support more equitable distributions of power and opportunity.

Practical Excellence

Good legal work should be both rigorous and useful.

We care deeply about quality, but we stay anchored in usefulness. Our work is thoughtful, precise, and built to move real matters forward.

Outcomes Over Hours

Legal services should create value, not perform busyness.

We value durable outcomes over performative complexity. We design our work around what will best serve the client and the matter, not around padding the process.

Personal and Professional Development

Growth is essential to meaningful practice.

We believe good counsel requires ongoing learning. We invest in our own development, stay engaged with emerging ownership models and legal frameworks, and remain open to feedback that helps us serve clients more effectively.

Community accountability

Reporting

Accountability should be visible. As a Public Benefit Corporation and Certified B Corp, we maintain reporting practices that reflect our commitment to transparency, public benefit, and ongoing evaluation of our social and environmental impact. This includes annual Public Benefit Reports and B Impact reporting that help make our commitments more than statements of intent.

We have published Public Benefit Reports since 2014, creating a record of our efforts, progress, and impact. These reports give our clients, community, and ourselves a way to see how our values translate into practice over time.

For mission driven people

Our Community

We are attorneys, cooperators, and social entrepreneurs. We know from experience that values-led work is rarely simple.

Many of our clients are asking big questions: how to grow without losing their purpose, how to raise capital without undermining their mission, how to transition ownership with integrity, how to structure power more fairly, and how to build something that lasts.

We are in conversation with those questions too. That shared orientation is part of what makes our work both rigorous and relational.
